The Effects of Cashless Payment Exposure on the Profitability Distribution and Downside Risk of Small Businesses during the Endemic Transition
This study examines how the expansion of cashless payments affected small business performance during the endemic transition period (2022–2023) following COVID-19. Using repeated cross-sectional data from the Small Business Status Survey (2020–2023, N=181,422), the analysis focuses on changes in the profitability distribution and downside risk rather than average effects. The results indicate that in regions and industries with higher pre-exposure to cashless payments, profitability at the lower tail of the distribution (q=0.10) improved significantly during the transition period (β=0.0542, p<0.001), and the probability of reporting losses declined. These findings suggest that the COVID-19-accelerated expansion of digital payment infrastructure contributed more to stabilizing financially vulnerable small businesses than to increasing average profitability. From a policy perspective, cashless payment infrastructure should be regarded not merely as a tool for transaction efficiency, but as a foundational mechanism for enhancing resilience and structural stability within the small business sector.
