The Hierarchy and Reconfiguration of Film Texts : Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Audience Discourse
This study examines how the coexistence of multiple versions of Justice League, surrounding <Zack Snyder’s Justice League> (2021), unsettles conventional understandings of the film text. Although the 2017 theatrical release and the 2021 streaming version share the same narrative universe and characters, they were presented under different conditions and formal structures. Nevertheless, audience discourse has often invoked these texts not as separate works but as different states of a single film titled ‘Justice League’. Focusing on how a particular text is repeatedly recalled as a point of departure for discussion, this study traces the audience-driven discourse emerging from the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement. It examines how one version comes to occupy the center of comparison through the circulation and repetition of interpretation. Drawing on Henry Jenkins’s theoretical framework, the study reconceptualizes film texts as relational entities shaped by distribution conditions and interpretive practices, and revisits the question “What is a film?” in the context of streaming platforms and franchise cinema.
