From Hospitality to Hostility: The Loss of Human Dignity and the Instrumentalization of Relationships in Overtourism -The Marketing Paradox of ‘Uncomfortable Invitations’ and the Essence of Turismophobia-
This study re-examines the issue of overtourism beyond its physical and environmental manifestations, such as overcrowding and infrastructure strain. The research findings are as follows: First, local governments exhibit a ‘gaslighting’ marketing paradox by aggressively inviting tourists for economic gain while shifting the blame for negative externalities onto tourists' individual behaviors. Second, this process results in the “zoo-ification” of tourist sites, where tourists are reduced to ‘mobile currency’ and residents to ‘staged performers,’ leading to a mutual loss of subjectivity. Third, such instrumentalization destroys the universal duty of hospitality, replacing it with market-driven logic—where tolerance is bought and sold—and deep-seated tourismophobia. This study suggests that the solution to overtourism lies not merely in administrative crowd control, but in restoring broken relationships and recovering the ‘emotional and ethical carrying capacity’ of local communities.
