Alternative theories of perception on othering refugees
Perceptions of refugees are socially fragmented, creating ethical and practical dilemmas in approaches to refugees. Recent perceptions of refugees both domestically and internationally are forming in a direction that disproportionately reinforces the otherness of refugees. This study sought to explore perceptual alternatives to discourses that otherize refugees. To this end, it employed a scoping review to comprehensively collect and examine such cognitive alternatives. The reviewed literature was categorized into political-sociological, ethical-philosophical, and ontological approaches. The alternative perceptions of refugee othering presented in this study are expected to promote balanced perceptions of refugees and support discursive practices that are inclusive of refugees at both macro and micro levels.
