Text Analysis Discussion and Literary Healing in Meng Nanja Essays
The purpose of this paper is to explore new perspectives on the study of Korean essay literature. To this end, this paper examines the consciousness of death found in Maeng Nan-ja's essays from a text analysis perspective, focusing on Lacan's "The Gaze" and Freud's "Werewolf." Maeng Nan-ja's essays demonstrate the nature of text analysis discourse involving the transference of perspectives between the analysand and the analyst. The transference mechanism in Maeng Nan-ja's essays acts as a healing effect for traumatic scars stemming from family history. This is evidenced by the graveyard journeys of 52 artists from both East and West, as well as their fierce self-narratives.In Maeng Nan-ja's essays, scenes of family death are described repeatedly and compulsively. the symbolism of the "blood-red canna," which serves as a metonymy for the mother's death, evokes Freud's "Werewolf." This leads to the realization that she is not a subject who "sees," but rather a subject of the gaze who is "seen." In Maeng Nan-ja's texts, death is produced as a material meaning, trapped within a metonymic web of terms such as 'canna,' 'summer,' 'Akutagawa.' Accordingly, the deep study of Buddhism and the I Ching is produced as a means to overcome nihilistic death.
