Sites that Mediate Memory : Independent Bookstores as Editorial Infrastructures of Neighborhood Memory in Seoul
This dissertation frames independent bookstores in Seoul as editorial infrastructures mediating neighborhood memory. Using Independent Bookstores—Seoul as a single-source meta-archive, it operationalizes editing as collect–arrange–enact and analyzes text, paratext, and images with an internally triangulated codebook. Findings show how naming draws boundaries, paratext and visuals build hierarchies, and programs ritualize memory. A four-type apparatus (record, exhibition, ritual, education) and ethics—transparency, fairness, inclusion—are proposed. Limits concern editorial ideology, sample scope, and invisible digital traces.
