Stepwise treatment characteristics of an upflow two-stage coagulation-filtration process for the removal of SS and T-P in nonpoint source pollution
This study evaluated the treatment characteristics and media recovery performance of an upflow two-stage coagulation-filtration process combined with a hydrocyclone to effectively control highly concentrated nonpoint source pollutants and overcome the limitations of long-term filtration operation. During continuous operation, despite extreme suspended solids (SS) shock loads up to 1,089.1 mg/L, the maximum head loss remained stable below 10 cm due to the deep bed filtration mechanism of the upflow fiber media. The first-stage physical filter demonstrated excellent pretreatment capability, removing 86.72% of SS; however, total phosphorus (T-P) removal was limited to 36.92% due to its inability to control dissolved phosphorus. By integrating coagulant mixing within the hydrocyclone and the second-stage filtration, in-bed contact flocculation was induced, significantly improving the cumulative removal efficiencies to 98.68% for SS and 84.90% for T-P. Furthermore, a mass balance analysis of the air-water mixture backwashing process using an airlift pump revealed an excellent average media recovery rate of 90.0%, utilizing only internal residual water and air scour without external wash water. In conclusion, the proposed system proved to be an economical and efficient technology capable of achieving advanced treatment of particulate and dissolved pollutants in stormwater runoff while ensuring long-term operational stability.
