Impact of operational conditions on aerobic granulation, treatment efficiency, and microbial communities in SBR systems
본 연구에서는 실제 생활하수를 대상으로 한 실험실 규모의 연속회분식반응기(Sequencing Batch Reactor, SBR) 공정을 이용하여 수리학적 체류시간(Hydraulic Retention Time, HRT), 호기시간 및 공정 운전 지표(유기물부하율 (Organic Loading Rate, OLR), 유기물/미생물비율(Food to Microorganism ratio, F/M비), 고형물체류시간(Solid Retention Time, SRT))의 변화가 AGS 형성, 침전성, 처리 효율 및 미생물 군집 구조에 미치는 영향을 종합적으로 평가하였다.
Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) has attracted increasing attention as a next-generation technology for advanced wastewater treatment due to its excellent settleability and high biomass retention. However, real domestic wastewater is characterized by low and highly variable influent loading, making it difficult to establish operational conditions for stable AGS formation and long-term maintenance. In this study, a laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) treating real domestic wastewater was operated to comprehensively evaluate the effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT), aeration time, and operational indices, including organic loading rate (OLR), food-to-microorganism ratio (F/M ratio), and solid retention time (SRT), on AGS formation, settleability, treatment performance, and microbial community structure. The results showed that under conditions with shorter HRT and relatively higher OLR and F/M ratio, the initial formation rate of AGS and granule size increased rapidly. In contrast, under long-term operation, structurally dense and stable AGS was maintained under conditions with longer HRT and lower OLR and F/M ratio. Organic matter removal efficiency was stably maintained above 70% under various influent conditions, while nitrogen removal efficiency was enhanced under conditions with sufficient aeration time. Microbial community analysis revealed that microbial populations associated with nitrification and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS)-based granular structure formation selectively became dominant depending on operational conditions and operational period. These results provide important biological evidence explaining the structural stability and nitrogen removal performance of AGS.
