Clustering-Based Vessel Detection and Size Estimation Using Optical Satellite Imagery
The increasing volume of vessel traffic and maritime activities has led to a continuous rise in the risk of maritime accidents, highlighting the growing importance of remote sensing-based vessel detection techniques for the efficient monitoring of ocean areas. This study proposes an unsupervised approach for vessel detection and vessel size estimation using optical satellite imagery. Sentinel-2 Level-2A surface reflectance imagery acquired over the coastal region near Busan Port was analyzed. Principal component analysis (PCA) was first applied to reduce the dimensionality of the spectral information and reduce noise, after which K-means clustering was employed to distinguish vessels from seawater. Automatic Identification System (AIS) data were then used to evaluate the detection accuracy, and ellipse fitting was applied to estimate vessel lengths. The results showed that PCA-based preprocessing effectively enhanced the reflectance contrast between vessels and seawater, whereas K-means clustering achieved a detection accuracy of approximately 80%. A comparison with AIS data indicated an average positional difference of approximately 78 m, confirming the spatial reliability of the detection results. For the ellipse-fitting-based length estimation, a comparison with the registered lengths of large vessels yielded a root mean square error (RMSE) of approximately 38 m. This study demonstrates that vessel detection and size estimation can be achieved using an unsupervised approach based on optical satellite imagery without requiring additional training data, highlighting its potential applicability to maritime surveillance and vessel monitoring.
