Sediment Classification, Depositional Controls, and Geoheritage Assessment of Beaches on Jeju Island
Although more than 90% of Jeju Island is mantled by Quaternary basaltic lava flows and volcaniclastic rocks, its coastline hosts a remarkably wide spectrum of beach types, ranging from black basaltic-clastic beaches to white, paleyellow bioclastic carbonate beaches and a globally rare rhodolith beach. To clarify the depositional controls underlying this apparent paradox of beach diversity on a lithologically monotonous volcanic island, 11 representative beaches— Samyang(S1), Hamdeok(S2), Gimnyeong(S3), Sinyangri(S4), Udo(S5), Pyoseon(S6), Soesokkak(S7), Jungmun(S8), Hanjangdong(S9), Hyeopjae(S10) and Iho(S11)—were investigated through field descriptions and laboratory analyses, including color description, stereomicroscopic component identification, magnetic response tests, and dilute-HCl reactivity tests. The sediments were classified into four beach types: (I) basaltic clastic, (II) bioclastic carbonate, (III) mixed, and (IV) rhodolithic beach. Even among visually similar black beaches, magnetic response and grain-size distribution differed markedly, reflecting distinct parent-rock mineralogies (basaltic lava versus Suwolbong hydrovolcanic tuff) and transport pathways (local wave erosion versus long-distance fluvial input via the Hyodon Stream). These differences indicate that the distribution of Jeju's coastal beaches is not confined to the simple erosional and weathering products of local bedrock, but is instead governed by complex geological and oceanographic processes, including wave energy, longshore currents, clastic input through fluvial systems, eolian action driven by prevailing winds, and the reworking of pre-existing sedimentary deposits. Bioclastic carbonate beaches on the northern and western coasts are associated with extensive eolian dune fields that supply secondary carbonates to the Geomunoreum lava tube system, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Udo Rhodolith Beach, which is composed almost entirely of free-living coralline red algal nodules, represents an exceptionally rare biogenic coastal landform on a volcanic island. To evaluate the geoheritage potential of Jeju’s beaches, a quantitative assessment scheme adapted from Brilha (2016) was applied to six representative beaches by integrating scientific (40 points) and usage (60 points) values. Gimnyeong (88.0), Udo rhodolith (85.0), and Hyeopjae (83.0) beaches were identified as the highest-ranking potential geosites. These results indicate that Jeju coastal beaches should be re-evaluated not merely as recreational spaces but also as integral components of the Jeju UNESCO Global Geopark, where they can complement its volcano-centered geosite network through educational, interpretive, and geotourism functions. Furthermore, the variation in scores across the six beaches underscores the need for different management strategies tailored to the characteristics of each beach, ranging from strict conservation to interpretive programs and specialist-guided access.
