Analysis of the Spatio-temporal Characteristics of Campus Environmental Noise and Anthropogenic Signals Using a High-density Geophone Array
This study analyzed campus environmental noise and anthropogenic seismic signals recorded by a high-density geophone array deployed at the Korea National University of Education (KNUE) to extend previous case studies of manmade signals at the Antarctic Jang Bogo Station to an everyday urban campus environment. Vertical-component continuous data from 60 geophone nodes installed at approximately 100 m intervals across a 1.0 km×0.6 km area were processed using band-averaged power spectral densities, hour-of-day spatial averaging, short-time Fourier transform spectrograms, and a multistation Doppler-curve fitting framework combined with plane regression of closest-approach times. Spatiotemporal PSD maps showed that the 0.1-1 Hz band reflected array-wide variations associated with wind speed and barometric pressure, the 30-80 Hz bands responded coherently to precipitation, and the 1-60 Hz bands were dominated by the heterogeneous spatial distribution of campus anthropogenic activity. Hour-of-day and day-of-week maps in the 30- 60 Hz band revealed enhanced PSD levels around the campus core and major roads during weekday daytime, whereas nighttime and weekend signals were mainly concentrated near dormitories and roads. On July 20, 2022, three classes of transient signals were identified within a single 5-min window: multimode Doppler curves from a distant airborne source, a multimode Doppler signature from a moving vehicle within the campus, and a non-Doppler broadband signal interpreted as pedestrian activity. For the airborne signal, reliable Doppler fits were obtained at 46 of the 59 stations, yielding a stationary frequency of 79.68±0.53 Hz, an apparent speed of 63.2±3.7 m/s, and a plane-regression bearing of 178.7o. High-resolution PSD around the closest-approach time showed narrowband peaks at 17.2 and 79.5 Hz with harmonic combs, consistent with a helicopter-type airborne source with four main-rotor blades and four tail-rotor blades. The results demonstrate that even in an everyday campus environment with elevated anthropogenic background noise, a high-density geophone array can quantitatively resolve temporal activity patterns, spatial source distributions, moving-source kinematics, and rotating-machinery signatures.
