Comparison of Growth Characteristics and Productivity of Tall Fescue-Warm Season Grass Mixtures in the Central Region of Korea
This study evaluated the effects of seed mixtures of warm-season grasses and forage crops into tall fescue pastures on botanical composition, growth characteristics, and dry matter (DM) yield in the central region of Korea from 2023 to 2025. Tall fescue was seed mixture with crabgrass, bermudagrass, or barnyard millet in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. In 2024, total DM yield differed significantly among treatments (p<0.05). The tall fescue + barnyard millet treatment (T3) produced the highest yield (15,848 kg DM ha⁻¹), whereas the tall fescue monoculture (T1) and tall fescue + bermudagrass treatment (T4) showed lower yields of 12,358 and 10,173 kg DM ha⁻¹, respectively. In 2025, no significant differences were observed among treatments (p>0.05), with annual yields ranging from 13.5 to 14.5 Mg DM ha⁻¹. Over the two-year period, T3 showed the highest average DM yield, while T2 (tall fescue + crabgrass) produced yields comparable to T3. Crabgrass established rapidly and improved summer ground cover, whereas bermudagrass exhibited superior persistence and regrowth. Both crabgrass and barnyard millet effectively compensated for the summer decline in tall fescue productivity. However, excessive dominance of warm-season species reduced tall fescue persistence. These results indicate that interseeding tall fescue with crabgrass or barnyard millet is an effective strategy for improving summer pasture productivity, although optimization of seeding ratios and sowing time is required.
