Analysis of the Taiwanese Blueberry Industry and Export Feasibility of Korean Fresh Blueberries to Taiwan
Taiwan’s fresh blueberry market is primarily supplied by imports, with locally produced fruit occupying a premium niche due to i ts freshness, bloom retention, and product differentiation. This study assessed the feasibility of exporting Korean fresh blueberries to Taiwan by integrating: (i) field-based industry and market observations; (ii) weekly harvest records from 12 blueberry genotypes, including cultivars and local hybrid lines, collected in 2025 from the Agricultural Technology Research Institute (ATRI) research field; and (iii) a review of Taiwan’s import requirements. These requirements include plant quarantine procedures administered by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency (APHIA), border food inspection under the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) by the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) system, and pesticide-residue compliance. Taiwan’s blueberry imports expanded significantly from 242.6 tons in 2010 to 6,695.9 tons in 2025, indicating rapid growth in the fresh blueberry market. ATRI harvests were heavily concentrated in weeks 18–23, suggesting that export competitiveness may rely on targeting off-peak market windows and consistently delivering premium quality rather than competing primarily on price. Regulatory compliance emerged as a critical constraint, particularly the protocol-based approach for market access and the “non-detect” principle applied to pesticides without established MRLs. We conclude that Korean exports would be most viable when supported by cultivar selection emphasizing firmness and bloom retention, lot-based residue verification aligned with Taiwan’s MRLs, a nd s tandardized forced-air p recooling with end-to-end c old-chain management.
