Moderating Effect of Self-Esteem on the Relationship Between Life Satisfaction and Depression Among Late Middle-Aged Adults: A Secondary Data Analysis
This study aimed to identify the factors influencing depression among late middle-aged adults (aged 50-64) and to examine the moderating effect of self-esteem on the relationship between life satisfaction and depression. The participants were 3,051 individuals aged 50-64 who took part in the 18th wave (2023) of the Korean Welfare Panel Study. Data were analyzed using t-tests, ANOVA, and regression analyses. The results showed that, among late middle-aged adults, depression was significantly associated with demographic and social factors such as being female, having a lower level of education, being unmarried, divorced, or separated, living alone, and being unemployed, as well as with lower levels of health satisfaction, life satisfaction, and self-esteem. In addition, self-esteem moderated the relationship between life satisfaction and depression; specifically, the effect of life satisfaction on depression was stronger among individuals with lower self-esteem. In conclusion, to reduce depression among adults aged 50-64, it is necessary to identify target groups based on their sociodemographic characteristics and to implement interventions that simultaneously enhance life satisfaction and self-esteem, particularly for those with low self-esteem.
