Cumulative Evolution of Trust Mechanisms in the Korean Cosmetics Industry: From Door-to-Door Sales to AI-based Hyper-Personalization
This study aims to analyze the development process of the Korean cosmetics industry from the perspective of the structural evolution of trust mechanisms and to derive a cumulative trust structure encompassing relational trust, institutional trust, and algorithmic trust. Unlike previous studies that explain the industry primarily in terms of consumer behavior or marketing, this study reconceptualizes trust as a core infrastructure that supports industrial competitiveness. As a research method, a conceptual research approach was applied, and relevant literature and industrial cases related to the cosmetics industry, consumer trust, the customized cosmetics system, and AI-based personalization technologies were comprehensively analyzed. The findings indicate that, in the early stage of the industry, relational trust was formed through door-to-door sales. Subsequently, with the introduction of the customized cosmetics system, trust evolved into institutional trust. More recently, with the diffusion of AI-based personalization technologies, trust has expanded toward algorithmic trust. This trust structure does not represent a discontinuous transition but rather a cumulative evolutionary process in which new forms of trust are layered upon existing ones. Furthermore, algorithmic trust was found to be more stably established when combined not only with technical accuracy but also with data ethics, transparency, and governance. This study has academic significance in that it expands the understanding of trust as a core mechanism explaining industrial structure, and it provides a theoretical foundation for the sustainable development of the cosmetics industry in the context of digital transformation.
