Numerical Evaluation of the Flexural Fatigue Behavior of GFRP Rebars with Surface Damage
The effects of the surface-damage geometry and area ratio on the flexural fatigue behavior of glass-fiber-reinforced polymer rebars were numerically investigated. A three-dimensional four-point bending model was developed using Abaqus and a user-defined material subroutine to simulate cumulative fatigue damage and stiffness degradation. A cycle-jump technique was used to achieve improved computational efficiency. Surface damage was idealized as a transverse notch (Type-T), longitudinal notch (Type-L), or local indentation (Type-P), with a fixed depth of 1.0 mm and area ratios of 0.5%–2.5%. All damaged models exhibited shorter fatigue lives than the intact model. At a damage-area ratio of 2.0%, the predicted fatigue lives of Type-L, Type-T, and Type-P were 50,202, 59,984, and 65,988 cycles, respectively, with Type-L exhibiting the shortest fatigue life under the present conditions. The damage direction and geometry affected the flexural fatigue life, even at the same nominal area and depth. Thus, these characteristics should be considered in evaluating surface damage. The predicted fatigue lives should be interpreted as relative comparisons rather than absolute design values.
