Carbonation Behavior and Mechanical Performance of Recycled Soil Paving Blocks under Different CO2 Curing Conditions
This study evaluated the carbonation behavior and product performance of recycled-soil paving blocks after CO2 curing under different conditions that followed the original factory steam curing. In the bottom layers of the paving blocks, recycled soil derived from crushed and screened concrete waste was used, with the combined replacement ratios of stone dust and recycled soil set at either 30% or 50% by mass. Approximately one week after production, the blocks were cured for one additional day under either air curing, ambient-temperature CO2 curing, or heated CO2 curing at 60°C. A CO2 concentration of 40% was used for both CO2-curing conditions. Weight change, carbonation depth, flexural strength, and water absorption were measured, and reaction products were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric–derivative thermogravimetric (TG–DTG) analyses. Ambient-temperature CO2 curing produced the greatest weight changes, at 1.36% and 1.88% for the 30%- and 50%-replacement specimens, respectively. Heated CO2 curing resulted in the greatest carbonation depth but showed smaller improvements in weight change, flexural strength, and water absorption. Both CO2-curing methods increased the flexural strength and reduced water absorption, and the 50%-replacement specimens satisfied the flexural-strength requirement after CO2 curing. The XRD and TG–DTG analyses displayed reduced portlandite-related peaks and increased calcite- and carbonate-related peaks. Overall, ambient-temperature CO2 curing provided the most balanced improvement in carbonation response and product performance.
