Evaluation of Tensile Performance of Anchorages with Different Assembly Methods for Field Application of CFRP Cables
In this study, we evaluated the tensile performance of threaded-sleeve anchorages for the field application of carbon-fiber-reinforced-polymer (CFRP) cables. The main variables were the presence of an internal hole and the method employed to assemble the CFRP cable and the sleeve. The average maximum load of the anchorage with an internal hole was 216.6 kN, compared with 278.8 kN for the anchorage without one. The CFRP cable, bonded anchorage, and swaged anchorage exhibited average maximum loads of 252.8, 245.2, and 358.3 kN, respectively. The swaged anchorage not only supported a 46.2% higher maximum load but also exhibited more stable load-transfer behavior than the bonded anchorage. Both types of anchorages ultimately failed due to sleeve fracturing, without cable pullout or interfacial separation. These results confirm the potential applicability of the swaged anchorage for the field installation of CFRP cables. Further studies of the optimization of the swaging conditions and of the effects of fatigue, sustained loading, and environmental exposure are expected to facilitate broader field applications of CFRP cables.
