An Experimental Study on the Verification of the Mechanical Properties of FRP Dowel Bars
This study evaluated the preliminary mechanical performance of a domestically manufactured 25-mm-diameter, tube-type, fiber-reinforced-polymer (FRP) dowel bar—designated F25—as a corrosion-resistant alternative to conventional steel dowel bars. Transverse shear strength and apparent horizontal shear strength were evaluated following ASTM D7617/D7617M and ASTM D4475, respectively. Nominal flexural strength was determined using a modified full-section, three-point, bending test based on the test concept in ASTM D4476. Five specimens were tested for each property, and the results were compared with the quality criteria established by the Korea Expressway Corporation and with the strength limits specified in ASTM D8444. The mean transverse shear strength was 161.66 MPa, which satisfied the ASTM D8444 mean-strength criterion of 160 MPa; however, two of the five specimens exhibited values below this criterion. In addition, the mean apparent horizontal shear strength was 28.68 MPa, which is lower than the 36 MPa criterion of the Korea Expressway Corporation and the ASTM D8444 limit of 50 MPa, with all specimens failing to meet either criterion. In contrast, the mean nominal flexural strength was 463.13 MPa, and all specimens exceeded the 400 MPa criterion of the Korea Expressway Corporation. These results show that F25 achieved an appropriate level of transverse shear and nominal flexural performance but that its apparent horizontal shear performance limited its overall compliance with the reference criteria. Because the present study was limited to material-level tests of the finished product, further investigation of the manufacturing and fracture characteristics, followed by full-scale, concrete-embedded, load-transfer tests, is required to evaluate its applicability as an alternative to steel dowel bars.
