Water quality prediction using exponential smoothing method based on operational time series data of nonpoint pollution treatment system
The ability to predict short-term influent and effluent water quality is essential for the efficient operation and real-time response of non-point source (NPS) pollution treatment systems. In this study, water quality prediction models based on exponential smoothing were developed for suspended solids (SS) and turbidity using operational data from an NPS pollution treatment device, and Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to examine the relationships among water quality parameters across treatment processes. A real-time influent monitoring system capable of predicting effluent quality and treatment efficiency in advance is required for stable operation of filtration-type NPS treatment devices. Turbidity is easily measurable and can be monitored in real time using sensors; its strong correlation with SS makes it a practical indicator for operational analysis. Exponential smoothing models were developed using the first 480 minutes (N=97; 59.6% of the total dataset) of a 805-minute time series dataset recorded at 5 minute intervals (N=162). The models exhibited reliable tracking performance of predicted values for the influent stage within the acceptable error range. Model reliability was evaluated using the Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), with values below 20% considered indicative of acceptable predictive accuracy. When turbidity data from the first 480 minutes were used to forecast stepwise SS concentrations, the Forecasted based Turbidity results closely overlapped with the SS-based forecast values and showed high agreement with measured values for the Influent. Since Forecasted based Turbidity enables real time SS prediction via turbidity sensors, this approach is considered a viable method for implementing feed-forward process control in NPS pollution treatment systems.
