Evaluation of operational performance of AI-based predictive coagulant control in a water treatment demonstration facility
This study evaluated the operational performance of AI-based predictive coagulant control in a water treatment demonstration facility. The proposed system was designed to overcome the limitations of conventional reactive operation based on jar tests by predicting coagulant dosage in advance and applying the predicted values to actual process control. A Model Bank consisting of Ridge, Lasso, Decision Tree, Random Forest (RF), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Deep Neural Network (DNN), and LSTM-RNN models was developed to predict the optimal coagulant dosing concentration. Among the models, ANN and DNN showed low RMSE values and stable error distributions, while RF was most frequently selected under both PACS and PACl dosing conditions. The predicted coagulant dosing concentration was converted into a dosing flow rate using real-time influent flow data and then applied to the SCADA-HMI-PLC-based control system. During demonstration operation, the predictive control reduced coagulant use by 39.71% for PACS and 54.08% for PACl compared with conventional reactive control. In addition, sedimentation basin effluent turbidity was consistently maintained below 1 NTU. These results indicate that AI-based predictive coagulant control can improve operational efficiency while maintaining stable water quality under the tested demonstration conditions.
