The analysis of energy consumption and saving in ultrapure water plant for the semiconductor industry
This study investigated the energy consumption characteristics of a 2,400 m³/day ultrapure water (UPW) plant supplying process water to a silicon carbide (SiC) wafer fabrication facility. To enable an integrated assessment of utility demand, the consumptions of electricity, steam, and nitrogen consumption was converted into equivalent electrical-energy and analyzed on a specific consumption basis. The results indicated that the annual total specific energy consumption of the UPW plant was 47.4±25.3 kWh/m³, with steam, electricity, and nitrogen accounting for 54%, 42%, and 4%, respectively. Among the electrical loads, inter-process transfer pumps presented 64% of total electricity consumption, implying that the plant configuration and recirculation requirements impose a considerable transport energy burden. Linear regression analysis using 30 monthly average operational datasets demonstrated a strong inverse relationship between steam specific energy consumption (SEC) and raw-water temperature, as described by the equation Steam SEC = 82.095−3.064T (R²=0.936, p<0.001). This result suggests that thermal control of feed water is dominant factor governing fluctuations in overall energy demand. The associated carbon dioxide emissions were estimated at 20.9±11.1 kg CO₂/m³, which is remarkedly higher than values reported for conventional drinking water treatment systems, reflecting the energy-intensive nature of semiconductor grade UPW production. These findings provide quantitative insight into the energy structure of semiconductor UPW systems and highlight the importance of feed water temperature management and transport energy reduction as key strategies for improving operational efficiency and environmental performance.
