Evaluation of sinkhole risk mitigation performance under sewer leakage conditions with geocell–geotextile composites
Sinkholes can cause significant human, social, and economic damage due to localized collapse of urban ground. In particular, leakage caused by defects in aged sewer pipes may induce internal erosion and cavity development, eventually leading to ground collapse. In this study, laboratory model tests were conducted to reproduce soil loss, cavity development, and ground settlement behavior induced by leakage from a defective sewer pipe. The mitigation performance of geocell– geotextile composite reinforcement was evaluated according to its installation position. Three experimental conditions were considered: an unreinforced condition, a bottom reinforcement condition, and a top-and-bottom reinforcement condition. Cumulative soil loss and settlement ratio were used as the main indicators to compare ground behavior under different reinforcement conditions. In the unreinforced case, seepage flow was concentrated around the pipe defect immediately after leakage, causing fine particle loss and piping. As a result, the cavity rapidly expanded and led to sudden collapse-type settlement. The cumulative soil loss and final settlement ratio in this condition were approximately 14.5 kg and 67.33%, respectively. In contrast, soil particle loss was nearly prevented in the reinforced cases, and cavity development and local collapse were effectively suppressed. In particular, the top-and-bottom reinforcement condition exhibited relatively stable uniform settlement without signs of collapse owing to the combined filtration, flow dispersion, and confinement effects of the reinforcement layers. Although its final settlement ratio was slightly higher than that of the bottom reinforcement condition, this was attributed to insufficient initial compaction and soil particle rearrangement during saturation. These results indicate that geocell–geotextile composite reinforcement can effectively reduce soil loss and cavity development and mitigate sudden ground collapse under sewer leakage conditions.
