Subverting the Hierarchy of Sympathy: Wordsworth’s Contagious Affect and the Politics of the Socially Marginalized
This paper examines how William Wordsworth challenges the moral stigmas imposed on socially marginalized figures, including the idiot, the socially unfit, the poor, and the mad woman, with particular attention to “The Idiot Boy,” “The Thorn,” and “The Mad Mother.” In comparison with the logic of sympathy articulated in Adam Smith’s The Theory of Moral Sentiments, it analyzes how Wordsworth affectively responds to and becomes attuned to the suffering and emotions of socially vulnerable subjects. From the perspective of the “politics of affect,” the paper further investigates how Wordsworth critiques and dismantles the logic of “reciprocity” and “imaginative inference” underlying the hierarchical violence embedded in Smith’s concept of sympathy. Wordsworth challenges the dominant structure of Smithian sympathy, which hierarchizes and regulates the sorrow and anger of socially marginalized subjects according to socially sanctioned norms. In doing so, he exposes the limitations of the moral sensibility and judgment of the ruling classes of his time, which excluded such subjects from sympathetic recognition on the grounds of their presumed intellectual deficiency, weakness, or idleness.
