Evaluation of Dynamic Responses in Serviceability Performance-Based Wind Design of Tall Buildings Using Time History Analysis
This study investigated the serviceability design of tall RC buildings from the perspective of PBWD. A comparison between the response spectrum analysis and time history analysis revealed that the simplified spectrum-based approach could introduce significant errors in predicting structural responses, particularly acceleration responses. Time history analysis is essential when occupant comfort governs the design. Accordingly, the principal serviceability limit states for PBWD were established, including occupant comfort, displacement and drift control, and the maintenance of elastic behavior of the primary structural system under service-level wind loads. A case study was conducted for a 40-story RC building, demonstrating that aerodynamic modifications, effectively mitigated vortex-induced responses and reduced across-wind acceleration and displacement. Furthermore, the results indicated that service-level wind loads could exceed the design seismic loads. Aerodynamic modifications were also shown to reduce this discrepancy, thereby contributing to the achievement of the intended seismic ductility.
