An Exploratory Study on the Conceptualization and Functional Typology of Buddhist Temple Forests: Focusing on Their Application to Buddhist Propagation
This study clarifies the conceptual boundaries of Buddhist temple forests and proposes a functional typology applicable to conservation, management, and Buddhist propagation. Previous studies have generally understood temple forests as forests and trees owned or managed by temples for preserving temple scenery, maintaining a religious practice environment, and supporting temple operations. Such ownership-centered definitions, however, do not fully explain the contemporary roles of temple forests in biodiversity conservation, cultural landscape, meditation, healing, education, and community service. This study defines a Buddhist temple forest as a forest or tree-covered space formed through a historical and religious relationship with a temple, owned, occupied, managed, or substantially used by the temple, and contributing to the conservation and production of religious, ecological, cultural-landscape, and communal values. Based on primary function, spatial relationship, ecological characteristics, use intensity, and management goals, six types are proposed: practice-environment conservation, ecological and biodiversity conservation, historical-cultural landscape, healing and meditation, education and experience, and community partnership and public benefit. These categories form a multi-label typology in which primary and secondary functions coexist. For Buddhist propagation, each type requires a differentiated strategy that prioritizes conservation and religious integrity over uniform tourism development. The Wonhyo-sa discussion is not an empirical case study but an illustrative and preliminary application of the proposed typology. Based only on published information and observable place characteristics, Wonhyo-sa may provisionally be viewed as a mixed type combining practice-environment conservation, historical-cultural landscape, and healing-meditation functions. This preliminary classification and the related program proposals require validation through field data and stakeholder consultation. Future research should validate the typology through national surveys, expert Delphi studies, and cluster analysis.
