Analysis of Leisure Activity Participation Patterns of Older Adults According to Fine D
The purpose of this study was to examine how older adults’ risk perception of fine dust is associated with their leisure activity participation patterns and differences across age groups. Data were collected from 255 adults aged 65 years and older residing in Seoul and the metropolitan area between October and December 2025. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, cross-tabulation, and chi-square(χ²) tests. The results revealed significant age-group differences in the perceived threat of fine dust, with adults aged 75 years and older reporting the highest levels of perceived threat to health and leisure activities. However, no significant age differences were found in perceptions of fine dust as a general social problem. Significant age-group differences were also observed in exercise location(a higher indoor proportion at older ages), leisure activity abandonment, the presence of changes in daily exercise duration, and the impact on leisure participation. However, no significant age-group differences were found in the change of exercise frequency or in the degree(direction) of change in daily exercise duration. Thus, fine-dust perception cannot be interpreted as directly leading to reduced physical activity. These findings suggest that perceiving fine dust as a personal health threat is associated with the leisure behaviors of older adults, particularly the oldest-old. The findings support the need for age-specific leisure policies, indoor physical activity programs, and climate-responsive leisure environments.
