Application of Mirroring Intervention and Laban Movement Analysis in Dance/Movement Therapy for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder in China
This study examined the application of mirroring intervention and Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) in dance/movement therapy (DMT) for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in China. Chinese and international literature was reviewed to analyze the characteristics of mirroring, the functions of LMA in movement observation and analysis, the connection between the two approaches, and existing research gaps. The findings showed that mirroring functions as a relational and nonverbal intervention involving movement reflection, mutual response, and attunement rather than simple imitation. LMA provides a systematic framework for observing and describing movement through Body, Effort, Shape, and Space. Although mirroring and LMA serve different functions, they can be methodologically connected by using LMA to observe movement qualities and nonverbal interactions occurring during the mirroring process. The review also identified limited research directly examining the combined application of mirroring and LMA in DMT for individuals with ASD in China. Further empirical research is needed to clarify intervention procedures, movement observation criteria, and culturally appropriate applications. This study provides a framework for understanding the relational function of mirroring and the analytical function of LMA within the DMT process for individuals with ASD in China.
