본 연구는 조선시대 및 근대 이전에 존재하였으나 현재 전승이 단절되었거나 소멸 위기에 처한 사당패 비지정 연희 50종을 대상 으로, 그 소멸 메커니즘을 구조적으로 규명하고 재구성 가능성을 탐색하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 수행 양식, 매개 요소, 기능적 지향을 통합한 다차원적 유형화 체계를 구축하고, 질적 내용분석과 혼합적 분석 전략을 적용하였다. 분석 결과, 사당패 연희는 신체기예 기반 수행연희, 도구매개 기 예연희, 환술적 변환연희, 서사재현형 연희, 대체매개 재현연희, 음 악적 수행연희, 의례적 상징연희의 7개 유형으로 체계화되었다. 또 한 소멸 과정은 구조적 변화, 권력적 작용, 제도적 재편이 상호 중 첩적으로 작용하는 ‘삼중 구조 모델’로 설명될 수 있다는 것이 확 인되었다. 특히 근대화에 따른 탈주술화와 공동체 해체는 연희의 존재 기반을 약화시키는 핵심 요인으로 작용하였으며, 권력에 의한 검열과 담론 통제는 표현의 다양성을 축소시키고, 문화재 지정 중 심의 제도는 선택적 보존과 배제를 통해 연희 체계를 단순화하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 전통연희의 소멸이 개별 연희의 내재적 한계 요인으로 인한 것이 아니라 근대 사회로의 이행 과정 에서 나타난 문화 생태계의 구조적 재편의 산물이라는 것을 제시 한다. 본 연구는 사당패의 소멸 과정의 메커니즘을 연희의 유형별 차 이에 따라 비교하고 분석함으로써 사당패 연희 변동의 구조적 동 학을 핵심적으로 규명하였다. 본 연구는 사당패 연희 소멸을 통합 적으로 설명하는 이론적 분석틀을 제시하고, 국가무형유산 비지정 사당패 연희의 지속가능한 ‘살아있는 유산(living heritage)’으로서 전승될 수 있는 전략 및 현대적 재구성의 필요성을 제안한다.

This study aims to structurally examine the extinction mechanis ms and explore the possibilities for reconstruction of 50 non-desig nated Sadangpae performances that existed during the Joseon Dyna sty and the pre-modern period but are now either discontinued or at risk of extinction. To achieve this, a multidimensional typologic al framework was developed by integrating performance modality, mediating elements, and functional orientation, and a mixed-method approach combining qualitative content analysis was employed. The findings classify Sadangpae performances into seven types: acrobatics-based performative practices, object-mediated performativ e manipulation, illusion-based transformative performances, dramatic -narrative performances, puppet and animal-mediated representation s, musico-performative practices, and ritual-symbolic performances. Furthermore, the extinction process is explained through a “triple-st ructural model,” in which structural transformation, power dynamic s, and institutional reconfiguration operate in an overlapping and c umulative manner. In particular, modernization-driven disenchantme nt and the disintegration of community structures are identified as key factors weakening the socio-cultural foundations of these perfo rmances. At the same time, censorship and discursive control imposed by power structures constrain expressive diversity, while herita ge designation systems centered on selective preservation simplify and standardize performance forms through processes of inclusion and exclusion. These findings suggest that the extinction of traditional performa nces should not be attributed to their intrinsic limitations but rathe r understood as a product of structural reconfiguration within the c ultural ecosystem during the transition to modern society. By comp aratively analyzing extinction mechanisms across performance type s, this study elucidates the structural dynamics underlying transfor mations in Sadangpae performances. It further proposes an integrat ed theoretical framework for understanding their extinction and hig hlights the need for sustainable preservation strategies that enable non-designated Sadangpae performances to be transmitted as ‘living heritage’, along with their contemporary reconstruction within evolv ing cultural contexts.
