A Study on the Influence of Artificial Intelligence on Calligraphic Creation and the Limits of Its Subjectivity - From "Heart‑Hand Unity<心手一體> " to "Algorithmic Generation"-
At present, AI-generated technology has been widely applied in the field of calligraphy and has demonstrated a high capacity to simulate the external forms of traditional calligraphy, thereby prompting renewed consideration of the mechanisms of calligraphic creation and the artistic ontology of calligraphy. Existing studies have largely focused on technological development and application scenarios, while insufficient attention has been paid to the structural differences between “embodied writing” and “algorithmic generation.” Drawing on traditional theories of calligraphy, including Yang Xiong’s statement that “書,心畫也” (“Writing is a representation of the mind”) and Sun Guoting’s notion of “心手 雙暢” (“the mind and hand working in perfect harmony”), this study adopts “the unity of mind and hand” (心手一體) as an analytical concept. From this perspective, traditional calligraphy is understood as a generative structure in which subjectivity, embodiment, and temporality are integrated. The study then defines the scope of AI’s influence through the three levels of “form, creation, and ontology.” It finds that AI has primarily affected the formal level and certain aspects of the creative process, while it has not yet altered the generative logic of the artistic ontology of calligraphy. From the perspectives of embodiment, experience, empathy, philosophy, and cultural ethics, this study further argues that the subjectivity of traditional calligraphy is not determined by a single factor, but constitutes a continuous process shaped by embodied practice, accumulated experience, emotional resonance, and broader spiritual and cultural meanings. Even when AI can reproduce the visual results of traditional calligraphy, its mechanism of subjectivity formation remains distinct from this structure. Therefore, this study argues that artificial intelligence has not yet fundamentally challenged the artistic ontology of calligraphy. AI-generated images may possess certain formal and aesthetic significance, but they should not be equated with calligraphic creation in the traditional sense. Rather, they are more appropriately understood as a form of image generation based on the visual grammar of calligraphy.
