A Study on the Pictoriality and Formative Characteristics of the Folk Paintings of Loyalty (Chung) Pictorial Characters
This study aims to examine the pictoriality and formative characteristics of Loyalty(Chung) pictorical characters, a category within Korean Minhwa (folk paintings) of the late Joseon Dynasty. Pictorial character (Munjado) are a distinctive genre of Korean traditional painting that combines Chinese characters and images to visually convey Confucian virtues while simultaneously serving educational and artistic functions. Among them, Loyalty(Chung) pictorial characters employ shrimp and bamboo as primary motifs to symbolically represent the concept of loyalty, creating a unique visual language through the organic integration of text and imagery. This research employs both literature review and artwork analysis. First, the formation and symbolic system of Munjado were examined, followed by an analysis of the formative characteristics of Korean Minhwa pictorial characters and the symbolic motifs found in Chung pictorial characters. Subsequently, five representative examples of Chung pictorial characters were selected and analyzed in terms of the relationship between characters and motifs, color expression, line quality and brushwork, and compositional structure. The findings reveal that Chung pictorial characters construct a distinctive visual framework that transcends the boundary between text and image by visualizing the concept of loyalty through the motifs of shrimp and bamboo. Furthermore, the artworks exhibit diverse stylistic approaches, including highly decorative and colorful compositions, character-centered structures, combinations of calligraphy and painting, and restrained compositions emphasizing blank. The study demonstrates that Chung pictorial characters are not merely didactic images but representative examples of Minhwa that establish an independent artistic world through the fusion of text and imagery. As visual art forms that integrate symbolism, decoration, and pictorial expression, they embody the characteristics of Korean traditional visual culture and possess contemporary relevance for modern visual arts and design. By systematically analyzing the pictorial and formative characteristics of Chung pictorial characters, this study reexamines their artistic significance and suggests new directions for future research on Munjado.
