Purpose : This study aimed to analyze the short-term (6 months) and long-term (12 months) clinical effects of vision training on binocular visual functions in children under 10 years of age with intermittent exotropia (IXT). Furthermore, it sought to compare differences in treatment responses according to IXT subtypes and refractive status. Methods : Thirty-one children under 10 years old (7.61±1.26 years) diagnosed with IXT participated. All assessments were performed with full refractive correction, including objective/ subjective deviation (distance, near), stereoacuity, Worth 4-dot test, positive fusional vergence (PFV), and accommodative/vergence facility. Vision training was conducted 1-2 times per week (50 mins/session) combined with daily home training (30 mins). Follow-up examinations were performed at 6 months for all participants (N=31) and at 12 months for those who completed the long-term follow-up (N=21), to compare training responses according to IXT subtypes and refractive status. Results : Significant improvements were observed after 6 months of vision therapy in objective/ subjective deviation, PFV, and accommodative/vergence facility (p<0.050), while stereoacuity demonstrated a statistically significant improvement. These improvement effects were stably maintained or further enhanced at the 12-month follow-up (p<0.010). The training response was particularly pronounced in basic-exo and convergence insufficiency types. Regarding the refractive status, emmetropic children demonstrated a significantly greater improvement in near PFV compared to myopic children corrected with spectacles (p<0.050). Conclusion : Vision training demonstrated significant short-term and long-term improvements in overall binocular functions for children under 10 with IXT. These findings suggest that VT not merely as an extraocular muscle exercise, but as an independent and fundamental non-surgical treatment option that rehabilitates sensory-motor integration. Furthermore, the results indicate that applying individualized intervention strategies strictly tailored to specific IXT subtypes and refractive conditions can be positively considered.
