Purpose : This study investigated the awareness among general healthcare consumers regarding university entrance quota for optometry programs and their preferences for policies managing the supply of opticians. Methods : A face-to-face survey on the control of entrance quota for optometry and medicine college program was conducted with 251 general healthcare consumers, excluding any related experts related to healthcare, across regions including Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and Busan- Gyeongnam, and the results were statistically analyzed. Results : Awareness regarding the regulation of the number of opticians was lower than that for medical doctors. Regarding optician supply policy, a high proportion of respondents believed that the current number of opticians is sufficient and that the regulation of the optician supply should be maintained at current levels. However, regarding how to regulate the supply of opticians and medical doctors, there was a preference for controlling the pass rate of the Health Professionals Licensing Examination rather than to limiting college entrance quota. Conclusion : The group with a high level of awareness of the classification of optometry as a healthcare discipline showed strong opposition to the policy of deregulating entrance quota for college optometry departments, whereas the group with low awareness showed little resistance to such a policy. This indicates that raising awareness that optometry is a healthcare profession would be helpful in maintaining the present policies regulating entrance quotas.
