Purpose : This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of awareness, acceptance, and knowledge regarding presbyopia among pre- and early presbyopic subjects, and to analyze the influence of these characteristics on the selection of presbyopia correction methods. Methods : An online survey on the awareness, acceptance, knowledge, and correction methods of presbyopia was conducted among 140 adults aged 35 to 45 years, a demographic expected to experience pre- and early presbyopia. Results : The subjects exhibited a negative perception of presbyopia and predominantly recognized early symptoms in smart device environments, such as enlarging screens on smartphones or laptops. Specifically, they experienced negative emotions, including depression and fear, upon recognizing the onset of presbyopia, and this psychological state significantly influenced their choice of correction methods. A significant correlation was observed where higher levels of depression or embarrassment led to an avoidance of reading glasses and a preference for progressive addition lenses or presbyopia refractive surgery. Furthermore, a significant difference was found in the preference for presbyopia refractive surgery according to gender. Conclusion : The selection of correction methods among pre- and early presbyopes is largely determined by their psychological state regarding the acceptance of presbyopia. Therefore, clinical experts should comprehensively consider the visual environment of early presbyopia patients to suggest customized correction methods.
