This study evaluated agar, gelatin, and paraffin—materials widely used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) phantoms—as cost-effective, entry-level candidates for magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) phantoms, quantitatively analyzing the optimal material and concentration to replicate the elasticity of a commercial dedicated phantom. A total of 12 phantom types were fabricated across four concentration levels for each material (Agar 0.6-0.9%, Gelatin 6.0-9.0%, Paraffin 55-85%). Elasticity was measured using a 3.0T MRI system, yielding 270 sample values. Paraffin phantoms were excluded from the analysis as they failed to generate valid MR signals at all concentrations. Both agar and gelatin phantoms exhibited a linear increase in elasticity with increasing concentration (Agar R2=0.84, Gelatin R2=0.90). In Dunnett’s post-hoc test, only the 0.7% agar phantom showed no statistically significant difference from the commercial reference phantom (p=0.09), and the mean differences from the reference were smallest for 0.7% agar (+283.8 Pa) and 7.0% gelatin (+278.5 Pa), with only a small difference between them. Regression inverse calculations indicated that agar at approximately 0.67% and gelatin at approximately 6.83% were estimated to correspond to the elasticity of the reference phantom. In conclusion, costeffective agar and gelatin can successfully replicate the elasticity of commercial MRE phantoms through concentration adjustment. While paraffin was unsuitable as an elastic material due to the absence of MR signals, its non-signal-generating property demonstrates potential utility as a structural component in phantom design.
