Integrating Data-Driven Learning (DDL) and Generative AI in Chinese Character an d Vocabulary Instruction: A Pilot Study on an Undergraduate Major Course
This pilot study examines a Chinese character and vocabulary instruction model that integrates corpus analysis tools (AntConc and N-gram) with generative AI (ChatGPT and Gemini) in an undergraduate foundation course. The model was designed around three principles: meaning-based vocabulary expansion, toolmediated self-directed inquiry, and critical AI literacy. A 22-item survey was administered to fifteen students enrolled in “Core Chinese Characters and Basic Chinese Vocabulary” at a University A in Korea in the fall semester of 2025. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Cronbach’s alpha, Friedman tests, Spearman correlations, and thematic analysis. Results showed generally positive responses, with sensory-based vocabulary instruction receiving the highest mean score. The AI–corpus integration domain was rated significantly higher than the digital-only exploration domain, and was positively associated with learners' perceived improvement in conceptual vocabulary understanding. In the openended responses, AntConc and N-gram activities were identified as the most helpful. These findings suggest the pedagogical potential of combining generative AI with corpus-based inquiry in Chinese vocabulary education and indicate that AI outputs may be more productively treated as objects of critical comparison rather than fixed answers.
