A Study on the Types of Subjective Perception Regarding Voluntary Dismissal among Early-Career Elementary School Teachers
This study analyzed the types of subjective perception regarding voluntary dismissal (self-initiated resignation) among early-career elementary school teachers using Q-methodology. Based on a literature review and interviews with four early-career teachers who had voluntarily resigned, 55 initial statements were extracted and refined through expert consultation into a final set of 32 statements across four domains: personal, job, school, and external environment. Ten early-career teachers who had voluntarily resigned sorted these statements using a 9-point Q-sort distribution, supplemented by individual interviews. Analysis of the statements showing the strongest agreement or disagreement, along with distinguishing statements, identified three types of subjective perception: Type 1, ‘Career Exploration amid Eroding Teaching Authority’; Type 2, ‘Pursuit of Work– Reward Equity’; and Type 3, ‘Burnout from Excessive Responsibility.’ Even when teachers faced the same external environmental factors, they perceived themdifferently depending on their type—as a fundamental loss of motivation for teaching, as an inequity between their work and its rewards, or as burnout stemming from an excessive workload—and these differing perceptions shaped their decision to leave the profession. Based on these findings, this study discussed ways to support teachers considering voluntary dismissal and prevent this phenomenon among early-career teachers.
