This study aimed to investigate visual sensory image characteristics according to plant shape in 70 companion plants and to evaluate perceptual differences according to gender and age group. Seventy companion plants commonly distributed in Korean plant markets were classified into three shape types: Vertical, Round, and Vine. A survey was conducted with 941 adult visitors at agricultural exhibitions in Korea from May 2024 to May 2025. Visual sensory perception was assessed using the Semantic Differential (SD) method with three adjective pairs: Dark–Bright, Cold–Warm, and Noisy–Quiet. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, chi-square test, correspondence analysis (CA), and MANOVA. The results showed significant associations between plant shape and sensory adjectives across all items (p < 0.001). Round plants were strongly associated with ‘Bright’ and ‘Warm’ images, whereas vertical plants were closely associated with ‘Quiet’ images. Correspondence analysis further demonstrated that round plants were positioned near the ‘Bright’ and ‘Warm’ adjectives, whereas vertical plants were closely located to ‘Quiet’. At the individual plant level, these overall shape-related patterns were also observed; however, the spatial relationships with sensory adjectives varied among plants within the same shape category. Gender analysis indicated that women perceived round and vertical plants as brighter and warmer than men, whereas vine plants were perceived as relatively quieter by men. Age-related differences showed that older participants increasingly perceived plants as brighter, warmer, and quieter, for round and vertical plant types. These findings demonstrate that the overall shape of companion plants is an important characteristic associated with visual sensory images and may provide a basis for the selection and utilization of companion plants by considering both plant shape and user characteristics.
