This study was conducted to investigate the current status of flower festivals in Korea by analyzing their regional distribution, seasonal occurrence, plant species used, visitor numbers, festival budgets, and economic impacts based on data from 2023. A total of 254 flower-related festivals held in Korea in 2023 were analyzed using data provided by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization. Among the 1,404 local festivals held nationwide, flower festivals accounted for 254 events (18.1%). Gyeonggi-do hosted the largest number of flower festivals (40), followed by Gyeongsangnam-do (35), Chungcheongnam-do (31), and Jeollanam-do (28). Flower festivals were concentrated in spring (59.8%), followed by autumn (24.8%), summer (13.0%), and winter (2.4%). A total of 62 plant species were identified, with woody plants representing the largest group. Prunus serrulata var. spontanea was the most frequently used species, appearing in 61 festivals, followed by Chrysanthemum morifolium, Hydrangea macrophylla, Rhododendron yedoense, and Tulipa gesneriana. Seasonally, Prunus serrulata var. spontanea, Hydrangea macrophylla, Chrysanthemum morifolium, and Camellia japonica were the dominant species in spring, summer, autumn, and winter flower festivals, respectively. Analysis of 107 flower festivals for which visitor statistics were available revealed a total of 22.94 million visitors, averaging 214,406 visitors per festival. The total budget of 170 flower festivals was KRW 37.48 billion, with an average budget of KRW 220 million per festival. The 23 flower festivals for which economic impacts were analyzed generated an economic impact equivalent to 43.7 times their total budget. These findings demonstrate that flower festivals make substantial contributions to regional tourism and local economic development in Korea. They also provide baseline information for developing regionally differentiated flower festivals through the utilization of distinctive plant resources that reflect local environmental and cultural characteristics, thereby enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of regional flower festivals.
