The problem of uncontact life is ultimately related to the problem of space. In the era of uncontact with Covid19, the problem of space is bound to emerge in church and theology. This paper attempts to explore the understanding of space by Alexandria’s director Athanasius through Plato’s concept of space as chora. Especially, “The Life of St Anthony”, written by Athanasius, suggests a lot about the understanding of space in the early church. Therefore, this paper will discuss Athanasius’ understanding of space, the nature and function of space, based on Plato’s concept of chora (space). Such studies will help us to understand the Christian worship space and find the direction for our church in the uncontact era. Plato’s chora is between objects and shapes and is a space where Demiurges create objects according to shapes. Chora is not an empty space. Chora is the force (dynamis) that gives matter the ability to turn into an undetermined form and property in a state of chaos. As such, space has both spatial and compositional aspects. However, Tanassius uses Plato’s idea of Chora in “On the Incarnation”. The desert space that appeared in “The Life of St Anthony” was a space in which Antonius faced his deep inner self and was a pure space where he experienced the existence of God. The role and function of space in Antonius’ life was, firstly, a space in which self and desire were revealed. Anthony’s space was a place to meet the reality of his memories and desires. And it was a place that clearly revealed the reality of Satan, which was an external force. Chora’s space is a space of self-disclosure, a space to experience the perfect other, and a space to be reborn as a true self. Secondly, in this space, Antonius unified his egos and experienced his transformation. Antonius shows how the heart of sorrow, pleasure, joy and discouragement was purified and transformed in the space of chora. Thirdly, as Antonius’s chora, space was a time to contemplate holy entities. Space as chora is not a concept of place. Chora does not stop at being the space of human or object activity. Plato’s chora provides a place (location) for everything that is created but also directs at existence and becomes a ground for creation as a recipient. Space is a place of creation and is involved in creation itself. Space as understood by Athanasius also does not exclude the spatial meaning, but it is a space where God works, a space where humans experience self-transformation, and a space for acceptance of God. Through expanding the understanding of space, Christianity should prepare for the post covid19 era.
