본 논문은 조선 천주교 신자들의 제사에 대한 서로 다른 입장을 진산사건을 전후해 윤지충과 정약용이 처했던 중국과 조선의 상황과 자신들의 생각을 언급한 1.2차 사료의 분석을 통해 고찰했다. 이를 통해 제사에 대한 이들의 상반된 입장은 천(天)에 대한 서로 다른 인식의 영향을 받았음을 밝히고자 했다. 즉 윤지충은 천주(天主)의 명령은 큰 부모의 명이며 동시에 교회의 명령으로 여겼기 때문에 천주교 제사 금령을 목숨을 걸고 지켰다. 한편 정약용에게 천명은 상제(上帝)의 명이었는데 상제의 명은 인간의 마음에 생기는 도덕을 행동으로 실행함 으로써 따르는 것이었고, 인간 도덕에 가장 중요한 덕목 중 하나가 죽은 부모와 천에게 제사 드리는 것이었으므로 그는 비록 공적으로 천주교를 포기하면서도 제사를 지냈다. 한국에서 제사 문제는 오늘날에도 여전히 기독교인이 되는 데 커다란 걸림돌 중 하나로 작용하고 있다. 이에 한국개신교는 제사에 관한 태도를 정하는 데 있어서 한국 고유의 전통문화를 존중하면서도 기독교의 정체성을 잃지 않는 신학을 확립해 가는 가운데 좀 더 유연하게 접근해야 할 것이다.

This study investigates the two contradicting perceptions on the Heaven and ancestral rites held by early Joseon Catholics, Yun Ji-chung and Jeong Yak-yong. As for Yun, he faithfully followed the Catholic prohibition of ancestral rites to the point of sacrificing his life because of his belief seeing his parents’ command and that of the Church equal to God’s command. On the contrary, Jeong viewed the Heaven’s command the same as Sangje(上 帝)’s, which demanded human morality that dictates human mind by actions. For this reason, he publicly renounced Catholicism and continued to perform ancestral worship. Even today in Korea, the issue of ancestral rites still hinders many people from becoming Christians. A more flexible approach in determining Korean Christian attitude toward ancestral rites will be needed to establish a theology that does not lose its Christian identity while respecting Korea’s unique traditional culture.
