본고는 대학 교양한문 수업에서의 ‘능동적 고전 읽기’ 지도 사례를 검토한 글이다. 검토 대상인 보고서 과제는 한국의 한문 산문을 한 편 선택하여 원문을 해석하고 비평 및 감상을 작성하는 것이다. 먼저 대상 작품 선택 현황을 목록으로 제시하고, 학생들의 작품 선택 기준을 분석하였다. 이어서 비평과 감상의 내용을 네 측면에서 검토하였다. 첫째는 작품 및 관련 주제에 대한 재해석이다. 둘째는 작성자의 삶과 연계 지은 감상이다. 셋째는 현대 사회의 문제와 접목하여 논하는 방식이다. 넷째는 한문 문장의 미감과 번역 문제에 초점을 맞춘 감상이다. 마지막으로 한문 고전 읽기 지도에 대한 필자의 견해를 덧붙였다. 먼저 원문 독해를 포함하는 것이 필수적이라는 점을 강조하였다. 원문 독해의 과정에서 고전의 내용을 온전히 소화할 수 있게 되기 때문이다. 또, 학생들 스스로 작품을 선 택하게 하는 것이 중요한데, 이때 참고문헌이나 작품 목록을 제공하는 것이 도움이 된다. 비평과 감상은 자유롭게 작성하되, 다양한 의견을 논리적으로 펼칠 수 있도록 이끌어 주어야 한다. 학생들 은 작품 선택, 원문 독해, 비평과 감상의 작성 과정에서 ‘한문 독해’와 ‘고전 읽기’의 방법을 배울 수 있다. 이러한 경험은 이후의 고전 독서를 추동하는 힘이 될 것이다.

This study examines the cases of the instructions in ‘active reading of classics’, in university s classical Chinese elective courses, by analyzing the assignments submitted in the classes. As an assignment, students were required to select a classical Chinese prose written in Korea, interpret the original text, and then write a critique and their thoughts on the work. This study first provides the list of works selected by the students, and an analysis on the standards by which students have employed in choosing a work. Next, the students’ critiques and thoughts have been analyzed from four aspects. First is reinterpretation of the work or related subject matters; second is thoughts written in relations to the students’ personal life; third is discussion of the work in relation to the issues of contemporary society; fourth is thoughts pertaining to the aesthetics and translations of classical Chinese language. Following the analysis, this study concludes with the researcher’s assessment on instructing the reading of classical Chinese texts. First, including the process of reading the original text in the assignment appears to be essential, as the students thus learn to finely digest the contents of the work. Also, it is important to let students select the work by themselves, but it helps to provide a list of recommended works or reference materials. While writing critique or thoughts should be done independently, it is also important to help students construct a diverse set of logically sound opinions. Through the process of selecting a work, interpreting the original text, and writing their critiques and thoughts, students can learn to read classical Chinese texts and classics in general. Such experience can also motivate the students in reading classics later on.
