본 논문에서는 리 매킨타이어의 포스트트루스에 비추어 2015년 개봉된 영화 <스포트라이트>에서 다룬 보스턴 가톨릭 신부의 아동 성범죄를 고찰하고자 한 다. 구체적으로는 스포트라이트 팀이 이러한 일탈 사건을 밝히고 나아가 보스턴 의 교구와 교구민이 이 사건을 은폐하고자 한 것을 고발하는 과정을 다룬다. 사 건 발생과 이를 은폐하고자 하는 과정에서는 매킨타이어가 주장하는 인지 편향 이 작용한다는 것을 지적한다. 인지 편향이란 불편한 진실과 마주했을 때 본능 적으로 사람은 심리적 불편함을 모면하려 한다는 것이다. 이는 어떤 사건에 대 해 이해하려 할 때 사람은 객관적 사실보다는 개인적 감정이나 신념에 더 의존 하는 경향이 있다는 포스트트루스 시대의 특성과 연계지어 볼 수 있다. 그 과정 에서 이러한 시대에 우리가 지키고 따라야 하는 종교적 진실을 간단히 짚어볼 것이다.

This paper examines Roman Catholic priests’ child sex abuse in Boston as depicted in Spotlight (2015) with Lee McIntyre’s perspective regarding post-truth. By detailing the abusive priests’ cases, this paper further focuses on the systemic problem of the churches which the ‘Spotlight’ team uncovers. The cases, which become more complicated due to the concealment of the Parishes in Boston, can be closely connected to cognitive bias McIntyre argues. With cognitive bias, people strive to avoid psychological discomfort in the face of uncomfortable truths. This is about post-truth which says that facts are less important than feelings in shaping or understanding our beliefs about empirical affairs. To overcome this post-truth, this paper suggests religious truths we should follow in this era.
