본 논문의 목적은 조지 허버트가 니콜라스 페라에게 보낸 편지에서 언급한 “수많은 영적 싸움”과 “완전한 자유”, “낙담한 영혼”의 의미를 밝히고자 하는 것이다. 허버트는 페라에게 􋺷성전􋺸 출판을 부탁하는 편지에서 이 세 표현을 사 용하였으며, 본 논문은 􋺷성전􋺸과 17세기의 역사와 연관하여 이들 표현의 의미 를 알아본다. 􋺷성전􋺸의 3부 구성인 교회 입구 , 교회 , 교회 군사 는 실제 성전의 건축학적 구조를 재현하면서 궁극적으로 성도가 하나님의 성전이 되도 록 인도한다. 17세기는 성공회와 청교도의 종교적 긴장이 극심한 시기였다. 이 러한 역사적 배경에서, 허버트가 교회 에서 모형시와 패턴시의 외형과 청교도 적 내용의 시를 쓴 것은 당시 성공회의 ‘의식’과 청교도의 ‘본질’ 사이에서 갈등 을 표현한 것이다. 그러나 허버트가 교회 군사 에서 모형시와 패턴시를 무너 뜨린 것은 결국 그가 ‘본질’을 따른 것으로 볼 수 있으며, 유럽의 죄로 인해 복 음이 미국으로 갈 것을 예언한다. 그러므로 허버트가 언급한 “수많은 영적 싸 움”은 성공회의 ‘의식’과 청교도의 ‘본질’의 싸움이었으며, “완전한 자유”는 그 가 ‘본질’을 택해 ‘의식’으로부터의 자유를 찾은 것이고, “낙담한 영혼”은 국교 인 성공회로부터 억압받은 청교도인들을 가리킨다.

The purpose of this study is to identify the meaning of ‘many spiritual conflicts’, ‘perfect freedom’, and ‘dejected poor souls’, which George Herbert mentions in his letter to Nicholas Ferra. The 17th century was a period of an intense religious conflict between the Anglican Church and the Puritans. In this historical context, it is understood that Herbert wrote poems of Puritanical contents in a shaped and patterned exterior in the part “The Church” in order to express the conflict between the ‘ritual’ of the Anglican Church and the ‘essence’ of the Puritans at the time. By destroying the forms of shaped and patterned poems in “The Church Militant”, however, it is considered that Herbert ultimately pursued the essence and prophesied that the gospel would depart from Europe and go to America because of the sin of the former. Therefore, we may conclude that “many spiritual conflicts” are a battle between the Anglican ritual and the Puritan essence; “perfect freedom” means that Herbert chose essence and found freedom from rituals; and “dejected poor souls” refer to the Puritans oppressed by the state religion of the Anglican Church.
