이 논문은 스캣을 구사하는 보컬이 다양한 리듬을 활용할 수 있도록 마크 머피가 사용한 스캣의 리듬 그루핑을 분석하여 리듬 그루핑의 변칙 구조를 제시하기 위한 목적을 가지고 연구가 이루어 졌다. 재즈 보컬 마크 머피는 캐스린 아이린 레이드(Kathryn Irene Reid)가 진행한 인터뷰에서 자신의 즉흥 연주 스타일에 가장 큰 영향을 미친 기악 연주자가 마일스 데이비스(Miles Davis)라 고 하였으며, 자신의 음악 스타일을 발전시키고 훈련하기 위해 레스터 영(Lester Young)과 빌리 홀리데이(Billie Holiday) 등 많은 재즈 뮤지션의 음악을 듣는다고 했다. 이같이 머피는 비밥 전 통에 기반을 두고 음악을 확장시키는 자신만의 개별적인 방법을 고안하였으며, 머피의 솔로는 흥 미로운 멜로디 아이디어와 다양한 코드 톤 및 확장을 사용하여 균형을 이루고 자신만의 독특한 스캣 음절과 창의적인 리듬 패턴을 만들어 냈다. 연구 방법은 스캣 리듬을 그루핑의 관점으로 보 기 위해 머피의 스튜디오 앨범과 라이브 공연 앨범에서 사용된 리듬 중 변칙적으로 표현된 독특한 스캣 리듬을 중심으로 분석하였으며 분석 곡에 적용된 리듬 그루핑의 변칙 구조를 제시하였다. 연구결과, 머피의 스캣 리듬은 곡의 기본 박자에서 벗어나 8분음표 두 개 길이의 패턴, 한 박 리듬 과 8분음표의 3연음 중 2개의 길이를 더한 패턴, 6박과 5박의 패턴 등 다양한 리듬의 변칙 그루핑 구조를 지속적으로 반복하여 적용하였으며 독특한 리듬 구조가 이루어진다는 결과를 도출하였다.

The purpose of this study is to present an anomalous rhythm grouping structure by analyzing the rhythm grouping of scat used by Mark Murphy so that vocalists using scat can utilize various rhythms. In an interview with Kathryn Irene Reid, Jazz vocalist Mark Murphy said that the instrumentalist who had the greatest influence on his improvisation style was Miles Davis. and He said he listens to many jazz musicians, including Lester Young and Billie Holiday, to develop and train his musical style. In this way, Murphy has devised his own individual ways to extend music based on the bebop tradition, Murphy's solos use interesting melodic ideas and different chord tones and extensions to balance them out and creating his own unique scat syllables and creative rhythm patterns. In order to analyze from the point of view of grouping, the research method was centered on the anomalously expressed unique rhythm among the rhythms used in Murphy's studio album and live performance album, and the anomalous rhythm grouping structure applied to the analyzed song was presented. Murphy's scat rhythm deviates from the basic beat of the song, and the anomalous grouping structure with a length of two eighth notes, the length of one beat plus two of the eighth note triplets, and patterns of 6 beats and 5 beats is applied as a continuous repeating pattern, resulting in a unique rhythmic structure.
