Nanosized WC and WC-Co powders were synthesised by chemical vapor condensation(CVC) process using the pyrolysis of tungsten hexacarbonyl(W(CO)) and cobalt octacarbonyl(Co(CO)). The microstructural changes and phase evolution of the CVC powders during post heat-treatment were studied using the XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, and ICP-MS. CVC powders were consisted of the loosely agglomerated sub-stoichimetric WC and the long-chain Co nanopowders. The sub-stochiometric CVC WC and WC-Co powders were carburized using the mixture gas of CH-H in the temperature range of 730-85. Carbon content of CVC powder controlled by the gas phase carburization at 85 was well matched with the theoretical carbon sioichiometry of WC, 6.13 wt%. During the gas phase carburization, the particle size of WC increased from 20 nm to 40 nm and the long chain structure of Co powders disappeared.

In the present study, the focus is on the analysis of carbothermal reduction of the titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder by solid carbon for the optimizing synthesis process of ultra fined TiC/Co composite powder. The titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder was prepared by the combination of the spray drying and desalting processes using the titanium dioxide powder and cobalt nitrate as the raw materials. The titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder was mixed with carbon black, and then this mixture was carbothermally reduced under a flowing argon atmosphere. The changes in the phase structure and thermal gravity of the mixture during carbothermal reduction were analysed using XRD and TGA. The synthesized titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder has a mixture of and . This oxide powder was transformed to a mixed state of titanium car-bide and cobalt by solid carbon through four steps of carbothermal reduction steps with increasing temperature; reduction of to and Co, reduction of , to the magneli phase(, n>3), reduction of the mag-neli phase(, n>3) to the (2n3) phases, and reduction and carburization of the (2n3) phases to titanium carbide.

The nano-sized Co particles were successfully synthesized by chemical vapor condensation (CVC) process using the precursor of cobalt carbonyl (). The influence of carrier gases on the microstructure and magnetic properties of nanoparticles was investigated by means of XRD, TEM, XPS and VSM. The Co nano-particles with different phases and shapes were synthesized with a change of carrier gas : long string morphologies with coexistence of fcc and hcp structure in Ar carrier gas condition; finer Co core in a mass of cobalt oxide with only fcc structure in He; rod type cobalt oxide phase in Ar+6vol%. The saturation magnetization and coercivity was lower in Co nanoparticles synthesized in He carrier gas, due to their finer size.

The magnetic Nd-Fe-B powders were prepared by a thermochemical method, consisting of the processes of spray-drying, debinding, milling, H-reduction, Ca-reduction, and washing. The optimum process conditions were studied by microstructural and thermal analysis. The resultant Nd-Fe-B powder was spherical with the size of 1 . Effects of the process parameters of each step on the microstructure of the powders were investigated, and their magnetic properties were evaluated

The study for producing the flake powders by milling of aluminum foil and gas atomized powders was carried out. The effects of lifter bars on the ball motions and milling of aluminum foils were also investigated. The aluminum foils were laminated each other, elongated, fragmented into small foils and finally formed into the flake powders during the dry ball-milling. The spherical atomized-powders were milled to coarse flake powders with high aspect ratio and then changed to fine flake powders with lower aspect ratio. Even though long times were required for making flake powders by milling of foils, the water covering areas of them were higher than those of powders milled using gas-atomized powders, suggesting aluminum foils were more plastically deformed by micro-forging. On the other hand, as the number of lifter bars increased, the necessary rotation speeds of milling jar for cascading mode and cataracting mode decreased drastically. It was possible to achieve same quality of milled flake powder by using the lifter bars under the lower milling speeds. The painting test showed that the appearance of painted surface was good and optimum content range of aluminum paste in car paint to maximize the degree of gloss was 3-5%.

Ultra fine titanium carbide particles were synthesized by novel metallic thermo-reduction process. The vaporized TiC1+ gases were reacted with liquid magnesium and the fine titanium carbide particles were then produced by combining the released titanium and carbon atoms. The vacuum treatment was followed to remove the residual phases of MgC1 and excess Mg. The stoichiometry, microstructure, fixed and carbon contents and lattice parameter were investigated in titanium carbide powders produced in various reaction parameters.

Nanostructured Cu-AlO composite powders were synthesized by thermochemical process. The synthesis procedures are 1) preparation of precursor powder by spray drying of solution made from water-soluble copper and aluminum nitrates, 2) air heat treatments to evaporate volatile components in the precursor powder and synthesis of nano-structured CuO + O, and 3) CuO reduction by hydrogen into pure Cu. The suggested procedures stimulated the formation of the gamma-AlO, and different alumina formation behaviors appeared with various heat treating temperatures. The mean particle size of the final Cu/AlO composite powders produced was 20 nm, and the electrical conductivity and hardness in the hot-extruded bulk were competitive with Cu/AlO composite by the conventional internal oxidation process

Ultrafine TiC-15%Co powders were synthesized by a thermochemical process, including spray drying, calcination, and carbothermal reaction. Ti-Co oxide powders were prepared by spray drying of aqueous solution of titanium chloride and slurry, both containing cobalt nitrate, fellowed by calcination. The oxide powders were mixed with carbon powder to reduce and carburize at 1100~125 under argon or hydrogen atmosphere. Ultrafine TiC particles were formed by carbothermal reaction at 1200~125, which is significantly lower than the formation temperature (~1) of TiC particles prepared by conventional method. The oxygen content of TiC-15%Co powder synthesized under hydrogen atmosphere was lower than that synthesized under argon, suggesting that hydrogen accelerates the reduction rate of Ti-Co oxides. The size of TiC-15%Co powder was evaluated by FE-SEM and TEM and Identified to be smaller than 300 nm.

The phase of Ta-Co oxide powders had amorphous structures after calcination below 50 and changed , and phase by heating above . The calcined Ta-Co oxide powders were spherical agglomerates consisted of ultrafine primary particles <50 nm in size. By carbothermal reaction, the TaC phase began to form from 90. The complete formation of TaC could be achieved at 105 for 6 hours. The observed size of TaC-Co composite powders by TEM was smaller than 200 nm.

In the present study, the focus is on the synthesis of titanium carbide/cobalt composite powder by the spray thermal conversion process using metallic salt solution as the raw materials. Two types of oxide powders of Ti-Co-O system were prepared by the spray drying of two types of metallic salt solutions : titanium chloride-cobalt nitrate and powder-cobalt nitrate solutions. These oxide powders were mixed with carbon black, and then these mixtures were carbothermal reduced under a flowing argon atmosphere. The changes in the phase structure and thermal gravity of the mixtures during carbothermal reduction were analysed using XRD and TG-DTA. In the case of using the titanium chloride-cobalt nitrate solution, it could not be obtained TiC/Co composite powder due to contamination of the impurities during the spray drying of the solution. However, in tile case of using the powder-cobalt nitrate scullion, TiC-15 wt. %Co composite powder could be synthesized by the spray thermal conversion process. The synthesized TiC-15 wt. %Co composite powder at 120 for 2 hours has average particle size of 150 nm.
