        This study intented to standardize the method for total polysaccharide, which is a functional marker for aloe vera gel in Korea. We used four lyophilized raw materials and commercial aloe gel products, certified as Health Functional Food by Korea Food and Drug Administration, including powder, solution, jelly, tablet and capsule, to optimize the analytical condition of dialysis and phenol-sulfuric acid reaction in polysaccharide analysis. The optimal conditions for polysaccharide analysis included 1 L water for dialysis and change 3 times for 24hr against 25 mL prepared sample solution. Validation test showed lower than 5% of coefficient of variation(CV) in intra-, interday validation in lyophilized raw materials and 4 types of commercial products. In inter-person and inter-laboratory validation with 4 persons from 4 different laboratories, CV(%) were 5.50 and 6.64 respectively. The linearity of polysaccharide analysis was assessed using 5 serial concentration of lyophilized raw materials(0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5%(w/v)). The results showed R2 ≥ 0.995 of high linearity. In the commercial aloe vera gel products, the results of reproductivity showed lower than 7.08% and revealed that the standardized method from this study ensured high precision for polysaccharide analysis.

        This study was performed to investigate the pesticide residue of commercial medicinal plants used for food materials in the Seoul area. Multi class pesticide multiresidue methods in Korea Food Code was used to analyze 100 pesticides. Analyzed samples were 261 cases(domestic 201, imported 60), detection rate was 19.2%(domestic 20.9%, imports 13.3%). 17 pesticides were detected in fruit(chinese matrimony vine, jujube, rubus coreanus, japanese cornlian cherry, schizandra, tangerine peel), and root(cnidium, licorice, astragalus). Pesticide over Maximum Residue Limits were detected in jujube, cnidium. Frequently detected pesticides were cypermethrin, chlorpyrifos, cyhalothrin, fenvalerate, bifenthrin. More than 50% of the sample were detected two or more pesticides at the same time. Because of the variety and increase of pesticide detection in medicinal roots and fruits, continued monitoring and safety management is required.

        Thís study ínvestigated the effect of students’ background characterístícs on their performance on the NAEA (Natíonal Assessment of Educational Achíevement). In thís study, 6th, 9th ’ and 11 th grade students' Englísh scores on the NAEA ín the year of 2004 were employed. ßased on prevíous studíes, ten student varíables were selected. The fo l1owíng two research questíons were addressed. Fírst, what ís the rel atíonshíp between student varíables and NAEA scores? Second, to what extent does the predíctíve power of varíables díffer across the school level? Two statistical analyses (correlatíon and híerarchícal regressíon analysís) were performed us ing the SPSS version 18.0. Results of correlation analysis revealed that ‘ understanding in English class' was híghly correlated with NAEA scores . Results of the híerarchícal regressíon analysís showed that ‘ understandíng ín Englísh class ' was the best predíctor of NAEA scores across the school level. The predíctíve power of ‘tlme spent on prívate tutoring or c1asses taken at private institutions’ became weaker, as the school level íncreases from elementary to hígh school. The predíctive power of ‘ self-study tíme' became stronger, as the school level increases. The findíngs províde practical ímplícatíons for polícy-makers wíth respect to íncreasing EngIísh achievement.

        본 연구는 Y 정수장의 세라믹 정밀여과막 공정을 위한 최적의 응집 조건을 도출하고자 수행되었다. 쟈테스트 결과 Y댐 원수의 pH를 7로 조정 시 응집효율이 가장 우수하였으며, 원수 탁도가 10 NTU 이하인 평상시 탁도 조건하에서 최적 응집제 주입량은 3 mg/L (as Al2O3)인 것으로 나타났다. 최적 응집제를 선정하기 위하여 응집제 종류(PAC, PACS (II), PAHCS)별로 미니모듈 실험장치를 이용하여 평가한 결과 PAC를 주입하고 원수 pH를 7로 조정한 경우 비여과유속 감소율이 가장 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 원수 탁도를 10~150 NTU로 변화시키며 미니모듈에서 비여과유속 감소율을 평가한 결과 원수탁도 10~30 NTU 조건에서는 응집제 주입량 증가에 따라 비여과유속 감소율이 크게 감소하였으나 원수탁도가 50 NTU 이상에서는 응집제 주입량을 증가시켜도 비여과유속 감소율에 큰 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 Y 정수장을 위해서 는 원수탁도 10 NTU 이하에서는 PAC (11% as Al2O3) 30 mg/L, 10~50 NTU에서는 30~50 mg/L, 50 NTU 이상에서는 50 mg/L이 적절하다.

        One of the most important objectives of post-marketing monitoring of dietary supplements is the early detection of unknown and unexpected adverse events (AEs). Several causality algorithms, such as the Naranjo scale, the RUCAM scale, and the M&V scale are available for the estimation of the likelihood of causation between a product and an AE. Based on the existing algorithms, the Korea Food & Drug Administration has developed a new algorithm tool to reflect the characteristics of dietary supplements in the causality analysis. However, additional work will be required to confirm if the newly developed algorithm tool has reasonable sensitivity and not to generate an unacceptable number of false positives signals.

        The purpose of this study was to examine the outdoor sportswear purchase behavior, outdoorwear sportswear brand preference, functional fabric awareness, and benefits sought. The research was performed through in-depth interview during February to March 2011. Data were collected from 10 consumers who had purchased outdoor sportswear and experienced camping in 6 months. First, the results from study showed that functionality/comfortability, design, color, and brand name were important factors in selecting outdoor sportswear. Offline stores were the main place to purchase, however, internet shopping mall and portal online community were another shopping channel as well. Second, respondents preferred imported outdoor sportswear brand to national brand. According to the study, the respondents trusted the imported outdoor sportswear quality based on the brand name, value, and brand history more than national brand. Third, consumers who had low functional fabric awareness were more likely to evaluate apparel products based on the brand name. Knowledge levels for textile functions were high in elastic, UV protection, air permeable, and antibacterial properties. The essential features for camping were water absorbing and quick dry, water resistance, wind proof, UV protection, and fire retardant properties. Finally the results showed that there were two sportswear benefit soughts: functionality and status ostentation.

        This study was carried out to investigate the antimicrobial resistance pattern and distribution of resistance gene determinants in fecal E. coli from chicken. Antimicrobial susceptibility test was performed on a total of 109 fecal E. coli isolates from chicken, collected in Gyeonggi, Chungbuk, Jeonnam and Jeonbuk province from March to November 2003, by the disk agar diffusion method. Eighteen commonly used antimicrobial agents approved in Korea as veterinary medicine were tested: ampicillin (AM), amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (AMC), cephalothin (CF), cefozolin (CZ), cefoxitin (FOX), cefotaxime (CTX), cefepime (FEP), imipenem (IPM), streptomycin (S), gentamicin (GM), amikacin (AN), ciprofloxacin (CIP), enrofloxacin (ENO), norfloxacin (NOR), trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (SXT), erythromycin (E), chloramphenicol (C) and tetracycline (TE). Higher resistance rates (≥50%) were observed against 9 antimicrobial agents including AM, CF, S, CIP, ENO, NOR, SXT, E and TE. Resistance was most frequent for TE in 105 E. coli isolates (96.3%). Twenty-two isolates (20.2%) of the isolates showed multiple antimicrobial resistance to 8, and 19 isolates (17.4%) showed to 7 antimicrobial agents. The distribution of the resistance gene determinants for S and TE was assessed by PCR in resistant isolates. Thirty isolates possessed the strA, strB, and aadA gene, 25 isolates possessed the strA and strB gene among the 66 streptomycin-resistant isolates. Fifty one isolates possessed only the tetA gene, 22 isolates possessed the tetA and tetB gene, 11 isolates possessed only the tetB gene among the tetracycline-resistant isolates.
