This paper attempts to trace T. S. Eliot’s thoughts on Lancelot Andrewes. Readers have thought little of Andrewes’s fame until Eliot wrote on him, thinking of him as only a prominent writer or preacher. But surprisingly Eliot in “Andrewes” compares Andrewes’s writing method with Donne’s. The paper suggests many ways Andrewes influenced Eliot. Eliot attributes to Andrewes’s writings three qualities ―1) ordonnance or arrangement and structure, 2) precision in the use of words, 3) relevant intensity.Eliot says that Dante in his Divine Comedy succeeds in harmonizing intelligence with emotion properly. Similarly, Eliot holds that the internal structures correspond to the external ones in Andrewes’s sermons. We can see influences from Andrewes’s sermons in Eliot’s “Gerontion” and Ash-Wednesday. Especially Eliot emphasizes that Andrews uses the phrases easy to remember. Eliot views Donne as continuously seeking for objects suitable for his emotions, and Andrewes as after the ones to express his self, not his own self. Thus Eliot finds Andrewes “wholly absorbed in the object.”

        T. S. Eliot is regarded as one of the greatest critics in the last century. As a critic he tends to have strict canonical standards. However, his attitude toward Tennyson seems rather favorable. Of Tennysonian canonical traits, Eliot thinks abundance, variety, and competence are the essence of Tennysonian excellence as a poet. He further feels that Tennyson is highly competent to express himself aptly whatever intention it is in his poetry and prose. It is probably because Tennyson is a master technician in poetry: his poetic language and its skills are rich and varied. He has absorbed all poetic skills, use of words, rhymes, rhythms, as in Maud and In Memoriam. Tennyson’s poetic excellence has already proved in Poems by Two Brothers co-authored with his brother, Frederick. In his criticism on Tennyson, Eliot often makes use of “great,” “wondrous,” or “master,” which he rarely uses when he studies other poets. Besides, it is rather interesting that Tennyson and Eliot are rather well compared: both use dramatic monologues while they withhold expression of personal feelings or emotion. As a poet and critic, Eliot is characterized by objective correlative, impersonality, unified sensibility, which almost parallel Tennyson’s. As a later poet, Eliot must have learned from Tennyson, a great technician of the last century.

In his essay “Hamlet and His Problems”(1919), Eliot analyses Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and evaluates Macbeth, Coriolanus, and Antony and Cleopatra favorably. To Eliot, Hamlet is not as good as Macbeth, because it has no objective correlatives. Macbeth is the work, in which he can find suitable correlatives. Unlike Hamlet, Coriolanus and Antony and Cleopatra seem to him to be an artistic success. This article investigates Eliot’s evaluation of Antony and Cleopatra based on his objective correlative theory. Eliot claims that an author’s emotions should not be in his works, and that instead he should present them objectively. Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra is the best example of this theory, by way of Shakespeare’s various literary conventions, such as paradox, overtone, image, symbol, etc.

On the basis of Eliot’s poetic theory, this paper attempts to analyze some of Shakespeare’s dramatic techniques as exemplified in Macbeth, one of his four tragedies. Macbeth is the shortest, but its structure is tight with its precise and dense language. Eliot sees Shakespeare as one of the best examples, who fits into his theory of poetry, “objective correlative”; A good poet is merely a medium, not revealing his own personal feelings. Shakespeare is such a good poet. Shakespeare, using symbols and images of organic things and cosmetic order, realizes the objective correlative; he presents things that represent his feelings, such as owls, hawks, eagles, doves, and a banquetes’ scene that symbolizes harmony, fellowship, and union. In the meantime, Eliot uses persona, alter ego, shadow images in his works; there appear Madame Sosostris, typist, clerk, Thames’ daughters in The Waste Land, which is the manifestation of his theory, the objective correlative.

It is well known that Eliot’s The Waste Land resulted from the collaboration between Eliot and Pound; however, what Pound had done in the making of the poem has been unknown until 1968 when the manuscript of the poem was found at the New York Public Library. Valerie published the Facsimile version with the photocopied original typescripts, which has contributed our understading of the collaboration between Eliot and Pound, and Pound’s contribution to the making of this poem. Pound suggested many revisions in the manuscript, but it seems that he refrained from forcing Eliot to accept his suggestions. Eliot must have realized what Pound had suggested would have made his poem more compact and precise in diction and would also refine the meaning of the poem. Though he was ready to incorporate some Pound’s suggestions and emendations, Eliot did not accept all of his suggestions; had he incorporated these rejected suggestions, his motif and diction would have been weakened and rendered unclear and ineffective; Eliot surely knew his own poem better than anyone, including Pound; there must have been things Pound could not fully grasp. The Waste Land is a fruit of a remarkable cooperation between the two great master poets of the last century, Eliot and Pound.

This experiments were carried out to find out the effects of different explant materials, kinds and concentration of plant growth regulators, and total nitrogen and sucrose contents on the in vitro regeneration of Abeliophyllum distichum Nakai. The effects of growth regulators on regeneration from 3 explant sources (leaf, internode and node) were more or less same. Leaf explants produced only callus with 2ip (Isopentenyladenine) and NAA (Naphthaleneacetic acid) treatment and other regulators had no effects. Test with internode explants yielded about same results but callus was obtained with 2,4-D (2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid). Node explants resulted in shoot regeneration by all regulator treatment except NAA and 2,4-D, but control also showed similar results. Callus formation from internode and node explants was vigorous by 2ip, zeatin, and 2,4-D treatments and high NAA concentration resulted in higher callus formation. In this experiment, various mixed treatment of growth regulators were also employed, using node as explant material. Shoot regeneration was obtained with BA (Benzyl adenine) + NAA treatments but the results were comparable with control. Generally shoot and root regeneration was poor with all combined treatment except 2ip + NAA and 2,4-D + NAA. However, callus was formed readily with all treatments. In this experiment, combined treatments of regulators were applied on the callus derived from singular regulator treatment. The results showed no shoot and root regeneration with any combination of 2,4-D, IAA (Indoleacetic acid) and NAA, but soft milky white callus was formed in all the treatments. No shoot and root regeneration was observed with any combination of 2iP, NAA and IAA, but somewhat hard, light green callus was formed in all the treatments. Callus formation decreased with high kinetin concentration in case of kinetin + NAA treatment. The experiments with total nitrogen content of media showed that low concentrations of 15 and 30mM were effective for the shoot and root regeneration. Sucrose experiment demonstrated shoot regeneration with 1~4% concentration, and root and callus formation with 2~4%. No root and callus formation was observed with 0 and 1% sucrose.

The genetic diversity among the genus Viola was evaluated using the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method. A total of 142 distinct amplification fragments by 18 random primers were scored to perform the cluster analysis with UPGMA. Viola species from the subsection Patellares were clustered into group I to IV. The groups from I to IV were consistent with its morphological taxonomy, series Pinnatae, Chinensis, Variegatae, and Patellares in the subsection Patellares, respectively. Even though V. albida and V. albida var. takahasii were classified in Chinensis, they were assigned into group I. The cluster analysis separated other subsections from Patellares in the section Nomimium. Interestingly, V. verecunda and V. grypoceras in subsections Biobatae and Trigonocarpae, respectively, were clustered into group C with a high similarity coefficient. Therefore, RAPD analysis can be used for providing an alternative classification system to identify genotypes and morphological characters of Viola species.

Nitrate reductase deficient (NR) mutant lines were selected indirectly by their resistance to 100mM chlorate in cell cultures of P. parviflora. A total of 585 chlorate resistant lines were confirmed by a second passage on a high concentration of chlorate. Frequency of spontaneous mutation was 9.7×10-7 in 3 month old suspension-cultured cells, and in non-selective media containing amino acids as sole nitrogen source. The frequency of mutation could be increased up to 11-fold by culture for 12 months. Out of 40 randomly selected calli, 22 were fully deficient in NR. The rest of the clones contained a decreased level of NR activity. Further characterization was carried out in 13 mutant lines which were fully deficient in NR and in 5 mutant lines containing residual (0-7.0%) NR activity, as compared to wild-type cells cultured on the same medium. The NR- mutants were tentatively classified as defective in the NR apoenzyme (nia-type; 11 mutant lines including the 5 with residual NR activity) or in the molybdenum cofactor (cnx-type; 7 mutant lines) by the XDH activity. The cnx-type could be further classified into two groups. In one group (5 mutant lines) of these, the NR activity could be partially restored by nonphysiologically high (1.0mM) molybdate in the culture medium. Both types of NR- mutants were unable to grow on minimal medium containing nitrate as sole nitrogen source, but grew well on amino acids. They also proved to be extremely sensitive to the standard medium (MSP1) containing nitrate and ammonium. Shoot regeneration was obtained only in the NR- mutants, which contained residual NR activity, but they so far have failed to grow into plants.

Present studies were performed to determine the physiology of seed germination in Viola species native to Korea. Twelve species, 1 variety and 1 form were collected, classified and used as materials: V. collina, V. blandaefomis, V. rosii, V. chaerophylloides, V. phalacrocarpa, V. patrinii, V. mandshurica, V. mandshurica for. albescence, V. seoulensis, V. yedoensis, V. keiskei, V. variegata, V. variegata var. chinensis, and V. verecunda. V. tricolor 'Helen Mount' was also used to compare wild with cultivated species. In order to investigate the effect of temperature on seed germination, seeds stored at 4±2℃ for 10 months or 4 years were incubated at 10, 15, 20, 25℃ under 16h illumination with 4 replicates per treatment. Seeds which had not germinated at 10℃ were transferred to 30℃ to assess the effect of temperature change in germination. Germination percent and the days of first, 40% and 80% germination were assessed. Capability of seed germination varied with taxon; Species belonging to subsection Patellares had high ability of germination, compared to species in the other subsections, and series Chinensis was the best among subsection Patellares. Species capable of high germination germinated in all temperatures with reasonably high germination rate, but the other species responded sensitively to temperature with different germination patterns. Higher the temperature, shorter the incubation time required for first, 40% and 80% of germination. Therefore, high temperature was effective in almost all species, not only for inducing high rate of germination but also the uniformity of germination. Temperature change from 10℃ to 30℃ had a positive effect on seed germination.

The methanolic (MeOH) extract of A. fruticosa bark, which showed immune-regulatory activities, was separated to purify an active compared by means of a multi-stage column chromatography. This resulted in the isolation and characterization of an isoflavone glycoside named 4', 6-Dimethoxyisoflavone-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside. Immuno-regulatory activities of the crude extract of Amorpha fruticosa LINNE bark were compared with that of an isoflavone glycoside (4', 6-dimethoxyisoflavone-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside). The crude methanolic extract of A. fruticosa and purified single compound showed 16% of relatively low cytotoxicity at a maximum concentration of 1.0 g/L in cultivated normal human lung cell line (HEL299). Cell growth of human T cells was increased up to 15%, 0.5 g/L of the crude extract added group. This was higher than a single compound added one. On the other hand, specific production rates of IL-6 and TNF-α from T cell were higher in the purified compound treat group (0.82×10-4 pg/cell and 1.08×10-4 pg/cell, respectively), compared to 0.5 g/L of the crude extract added group (0.65×10-4 pg/cell and 0.84×10-4 pg/cell, respectively). In addition, the growth of NK-92MI cells incubated with the crude extract was higher up to 56% over the cells grown with a single compound (0.5 g/L). In overall, the crude extract showed relatively higher immuno-regulatory activities compared with a single compound, probably due to the synergic effect given by other substances existed in the crude extract. Even though the siolated compound stimulated higher secretion of cytokines from human T cells.

When we carried out an anti-stress study using the extracts of A. senticosus, R. coreanus, F .japonica root, and A. fruticosa fruit grown in Korea, the results showed that blood cell counts returned to normal levels fastest with R. coreanus after stress application. The total WBC count was decreased in mice due to stress, whereas the number of lymphocytes was increased. The serum glucose level was higher in the control group compared with the comparative stress group. The weight of each organ to returning to normal level was significantly faster in those mice treated with the extracts compared with those in control groups. Especially, it even return to that of normal level with R. coreanus extract, suggesting that the administration of the plant extracts in this study would affect hormonal activities in the body to increase immune activities. F. japonica root that showed the highest anti-stress activities maybe effective for lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. These results would provide basic data to examine anti-stress effects of natural plants. Further in-depth studies could contribute in the development of functional plant materials with anti-stress activities.

Present studies were carried out to produce tetraploid plants by colchicine treatment using seeds, seedlings and shoot tips of Codonopsis lanceolata. Three tetraploid plants of C. lanceolata were produced from seeds which absorbed 0.1 % colchicine solution for 12 hours, and 0.5% colchicine solution for 1 and 6 hours from seedlings, respectively. But tetraploid was not produced from shoot tips treated by colchicine solution. Compared to diploid, tetraploid plants had larger stomata, but less number of stomata. Fresh weight of tetraploid plants was 1.4∼3.6 times heavier than diploid plants.
