In this study, the elevator safety device was investigated analytically. It is the only safety device that can lift the brake in an emergency situation. When the safety device is in contact with the guide rail and the brakes applied, the structure can be stopped due to the friction occurring between them. Study on the shape of the portion contacting the safety device and the guide rail wedge directly were performed based on four cases. Each cases were classified according to the contact conditions. The contact conditions are mainly line contact, surface contact, and point contact. According to the contact conditions, the frictional stress due to the forced displacement that occurred during the elevator braking is also considered. For the perpendicular guide rail and sliding distance, the braking force shows excellent results for the line contact conditions. The results also showed less distribution.
