This study aims to examine the critical discourse on the artificial intelligence system that intersects with human, society, and the Earth, focusing on Kate Crawford and Vladan Joler’s collaborative project, Anatomy of an AI System. Using the Amazon Echo, an AI voice recognition speaker, as a case study, Anatomy of an AI System illuminates the material and social conditions upon which the technological system is founded. As a ‘data visualization’, it reveals the ruthless extraction of labor, data, and resources hidden behind an AI system; Crawford and Joler have employed ‘critical cartography’ as an epistemic and practical method to visualize the complex terrain shaped by the AI system. This paper conducts a ‘map reading’ by incorporating Levi R. Bryant’s concept of ‘onto-cartography,’ and suggests Crawford and Joler’s critical map visualizes the extensive extraction of labor, data, and resources on human, social, and planetary scales.
